Hlabisa to meet unions over the future of CWP participants

SABC News reports that Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has announced plans to meet with labour unions this week to find solutions for continuing support for the Community Work Programme (CWP) participants aged 55 and older amid budget challenges. The announcement comes after Hlabisa extended contracts for these workers until the end of March. In August 2024, the Minister stated that budget cuts would lead to the termination of participation for workers in this age group by the end of January. Hlabisa says discussions with stakeholders aim to find sustainable outcomes.

“This Friday, I’m meeting with COSATU and SAMWU so that in the next coming two months we must find an amicable solution. For instance, there are participants who are 60 years and above already receiving the old age grant. We must consider – what if we relieve those people? They are amounting to 33 000 and ensure that those who have not yet received the grant who are turning 60 – we assist them quickly to register and qualify,” Hlabisa explained.
