Project workers in De Vrede in limbo after contractor goes AWOL

Capricorn FM reports that a group of workers in De Vrede under the Blouberg Local Municipality have raised concerns that a contractor responsible for a water connection project has not returned to work after closing the business for the festive season last year. One of the workers says the R38.6 million water project meant to connect water to households is not even halfway near its completion stage and has missed its November 2023 deadline for completion.

This worker claims the contractor also failed to pay them several times, and has questioned the municipality’s decision to keep the contractor. Meanwhile, the Capricorn District Municipality spokesperson Moffat Senyatsi says the contractor experienced some cash flow issues last year which also caused delays in him going back on site this year. Senyatsi says they have given the contractor 14 days to explain how he will meet his contractual obligations.
