The South African reports that in an attempt to reduced the number of unemployed nurses, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) has called on all unemployed nurses to submit their details to them as there are potential employers within the private sector.
Earlier this year DENOSA announced that there are 20 000 unemployed nurses around the country. Despite the shortage in the health sector, various provincial health departments have either no renewed or terminated contracts of hundreds of their nurses. “The private sector and other potential employers are looking for nurses to employ. This happened after it was reported that there are thousands of unemployed nurses in the country. The government stated that there are no funds to employ nurses in the state health care institutions”, the Union says.
“Please note that this information will be forwarded to the potential employers. The potential employer will contact you for further information and interaction”, the unions says. In May, private healthcare network Netcare raised its concerns over the shortage of nurses in the country in both private and public healthcare sector. The network also revealed that the number will significantly increase in 2030 as a large number of nurses are set to retire. According to Netcare, the current shortage in the South Africa sits between 26 000 and 62 000 nurses, with the gap expected to grow to between 131 000 and 166 000 in the next seven years.
