SAMATU members march over employed of doctors issue in Mpumalanga

SABC News writes that The South African Medical Association Trade Union (SAMATU) will today march in Mpumalanga, to demand the employment of medical doctors in the province. They say the march follows numerous unsuccessful attempts to address the matter with the National Health Department.

Dr. Mandla Matshabe, one of the doctors participating in the march says, “The ratio of doctor to patient, must be one is to 1000 in Mpumalanga, according to statistics released. In 2022, we had one doctor for every 3300 plus patients.”

“This leads to burnout from the doctors because they are overburdened and they are overworked. This leads to a lot of mistakes being committed because doctors are fatigued. But obviously, the more doctors that we have, the lesser the waiting times in our institutions.”
