SABC News writes that South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in Northern Cape says all role players must be held accountable for failing to pay R73 million contributions into the pension funds of workers at Renosterberg Municipality. This is after it came to light that workers will not be able to benefit from the two-pot system. The municipality failed to pay contributions between 2018 and 2023 and as a result, two senior managers are now facing fraud charges.
“To us it is a shameful indication of financial mismanagement and the total violation of the Pension Fund Act. We are also equally disappointed of the silence of the provincial treasury, but we also feel that the pension fund must also be held accountable alongside the municipality for this disaster, because they should have acted swiftly in earlier instances and not waited until the situation escalated to this disaster,” says Samwu General-Secretary in the Dercana region, Peter Demus.
